Information for Parents- Chicken Pox in School (17th January 2012)

There has been a case of chicken pox reported in school. The following information is taken from NHS Direct:

Chickenpox  is a mild and common childhood illness that most children catch at some point. It causes a rash of red, itchy spots that turn into fluid-filled blisters. They then crust over to form scabs, which eventually drop off. Some children have only a few spots, but in others they can cover the entire body. The spots are most likely to appear on the face, ears and scalp, under the arms, on the chest and stomach and on the arms and legs. To prevent spreading the infection, keep children off nursery or school until all the spots have crusted over. Chickenpox in children is considered a mild illness, but expect your child to feel pretty miserable and irritable while they have it. Your child is likely to have a fever at least for the first few days of the illness. The spots can be incredibly itchy. There is no specific treatment for chickenpox, but there are pharmacy remedies which can alleviate symptoms, such as paracetamol to relieve fever and calamine lotion and cooling gels to ease itching. In most children, the blisters crust up and fall off naturally within one to two weeks. For more information, please visit www.nhs.uk/conditions/chickenpox/Pages/Introduction.aspx

Football Match vs Scotton Lingerfield

We played together as a team – Anna, Luke, Joe, Callum, Joseph, Harrison, Dan, Jack, Joshua , Josh , and we want to tell you we scored and we were proud of how we played together. Everyone got stuck in and we were really proud of how Anna and Luke encouraged everyone else. Our goal scorers this time were: Callum , Joseph , Jack and Dan .It was 11-8 to Scotton on the final score and they went home with the cup. Mr Shillito said we have improved because we are passing the ball more. Joe Hawkins saved a penalty and got a fair play certificate. We worked as a team and we like playing schools like Scotton; we are going to play regularly.

Pupil Committees

Pupils in Y1 to Y6 had their first committee meeting this week. Ably led by Y6 chairpeople, the meetings were very productive and resulted in some fantastic ideas being brought forward for committees to work on through the year to develop their school further. A copy of the action plans that the pupils is in the letters section of the website- please do have a look- if there is anything that you feel you can help with, please let a member of staff know!

We look forward to welcoming our new pupils to Goldsborough Church of England Primary School in due course. Parents will have received notification of their child's place at school and will be sent a letter and information pack in the post from school shortly. In the meantime, if families wish to visit the school again now that your place has been confirmed, please do not hesitate to call Mrs Oxley in the office on 01423 862617.

Goldsborough's own Royal Wedding

On Tuesday 26th April, Goldsborough held its own Royal Wedding. As part of Class 3's work on traditions and ceremonies within the Christian faith, they planned and held a wedding to which all pupils, Class 3 parents and the Mayor of Knaresborough were invited! It was a wonderful day which enabled all pupils to learn first hand about the words spoken and traditions followed at weddings. Pupils now eagerly await the real Royal Wedding to see how similar ours was to theirs! Photos of the wedding and our 'Street Party' lunch can be found in the 'In and out of the Classroom' section of the Gallery.

Robinwood

Everyone had an absolutely fantastic time at Robinwood this week! Mr Shillito and Miss Wilson were so proud of everyone's achievements and, needless to say, children's behaviour was excellent throughout the visit. Please see the Children section of the website for photos- you will see here exactly why the children are so tired (and why there are little bits of mud, leaves etc in his or her bag!) Well done everyone- we are so proud of you!

Wednesday morning
Everyone doing well at Robinwood. Yesterday was piranha pool, zip wire and dragon questing. All tired last night and not too muddy, and there's a fun filled day planned for today too.  The children look forward to seeing you on their return at the end of Wednesday. When the coach is on it's return journey, Mrs Robson hopes to send a text to parents giving the estimated arrival time.

Tuesday morning
We are delighted to report that all the children slept well at Robinwood and are just tucking into a cooked breakfast (8.30 am). There is no connectivity to the website at Robinwood just now, so any messages will be communicated like this and by text message and on the playground noticeboard. No doubt there will be a full report and news galore when the children return later in the week!

Robinwood Visit

We look forward to seeing everyone at 8:30am (yawn!) on Monday morning ready to leave at 8:45am. Remember- you don't need to wear uniform- please come in comfortable clothes for travelling that you can walk in when you get to Robinwood (no jeans please, trainers or strong walking shoes). Remember your maths homework which is to consider capacity, weight and space when packing your bag- don't be tempted to go for another bag if you can't fit your stuff in- just pack better! I hope you're as excited as Mr Shillito and Miss Wilson are!

Children in Need

We had a great Pyjama Day for Children in Need. Mr Shillito was confident that the £100 target, needed for him to wear a wig and pink slippers for the day, would not be reached...it soon became clear that the target would be well beaten- we raised just short of £180! Well done everyone! The talent show was great too- the voting was as close as X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing, with Maia and Lauren pipping the others to win our very first 'Goldsborough's got Talent' competition. See photos below.

All Age Service at St Mary's, Goldsborough.

Goldsborough School was well represented at this month's all age service at St Mary's. a 14 strong choir sang beautifully and pupils also contributed to the service through prayers and singing a song learnt at Sunday School. Well done to all pupils for once again representing our school so well!

Class 3’s Trip to Hackfall Forest and Lime Tree Farm (By Catherine, Lili, Fionn, Georgia and Maia!)

First we went to Hackfall Forest, and we met a very nice lady called Dr. Katherine Forsey. She showed us round the forest and we made story sticks. A story stick is a stick with rubber bands around it. We had to slot leaves and other signs of autumn under the rubber bands. On our way we found lots of things including leaves from the oak and sycamore trees, acorns, blackberries and even purple bird poo!
When we reached the end of the track, we did some mini-beast hunting and we found some very interesting creatures like toads, newts, ground beetles and worms, and after that we made unique habitats for them. It was great fun!
Next, we went to Lime Tree Farm and had a go on the composting toilets and they were awesome because when you have finished you have to put sawdust in the toilet. Also, we had lunch in a round house and went pond dipping. Also we went to watch the birds in the bird hide. Last of all, we went to see the badgers.
So in conclusion we had a wonderful day. We went on the coach back a heard the tale of the Hackfall Beast!!!
Class 2 Sleepover

Class 2 had a wonderful time on their sleepover recently. They prepared their own meal, built a campfire, Hunted for treasure and minibeasts, tackled the adventure playground and made their own flying bugs! It was a wonderful two days in which Y2 and 3 really built their independence and learnt about themselves and each other.

Bradley Primary School Visit

Class 3 welcomed their pen pals from Bradley Primary School in Nelson, near Burnley, this week. It was a great day where new friendships were made. Pupils enjoyed making aboriginal art tiles and playing a cricket tournament together. See the gallery for pictures.

FairTrade Tuck Shop

On Friday, the chair and vice chair of our Healthy School Group launched Goldsborough's very own FairTrade tuck shop. It sells FairTrade fruit, cereal bars and fruit juice treats whilst helping to raise awareness of the need to pay workers around the world fairly.

Once upon a time...

Class 2 pupils have been busy designing and making puppets as part of their Fairy Stories topic this week. They were extremely careful when sewing the edges and have put some fantastic detail onto each one to really bring them to life! Their next task is to plan stories with them to tell to our younger pupils.

No hung parliament in Goldsborough!

Goldsborough pupils held their very own general election recently and we are delighted to report that there was a clear winner. After setting up their political parties, choosing a name and deciding on a logo, each group decided on their election manifesto and then debated their values and ideas in 'parliament' (Class 3's room). Each party then presented their campaign speech to the school, who all voted, and there were no queues when it came to deadline time. The majority needed to avoid a hung parliament was 3, so the Orange Party were delighted to win Goldsborough CE Primary School's General Election by 7 votes!

Our Trip to Bradford by Anna and Fionn in Class 2

Lat Tuesday, Class 3 and Class 2 went to Bradford Imax Centre. First, we watched a space film in 3D. After that, we did one activity each. Then we had our lunch and we only had 20 minutes to eat it! The best part of the trip was the 3D film because we had to wear cool 3D glasses and they looked like skiing glasses!

Eco Schools Award

We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded the Bronze 'Eco Schools' Award! Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey. Children are the driving force behind Eco-Schools – they lead the eco-committee and help carry out an audit to assess the environmental performance of their school. Through consultation with the rest of the school and the wider community it is the pupils that decide which environmental themes they want to address and how they are going to do it. Measuring and monitoring is an integral part of the Eco-Schools programme, providing schools with all the evidence they need to really shout about their environmental success. Our next step is to achieve the silver award! Well done to JAcob and Lauren (our Eco Committee chair and vice chair) and everyone for their contributions to our school's sustainability!

Fundraising to help victims of the Haiti Earthquake

We had a non-uniform day to raise money for those affected by the recent earthquake in Haiti. Everyone brought a donation and we raised a fabulous £325.93 for the Disasters Emergency Committee! This included a tremendous £129 raised from the raffle organised by Holly and Maria- well done girls!

Eco Day

Pupils from all classes enjoyed a fantastic Eco Day this week, organised by Miss Sanderson and the Eco Committee. Everyone was very busy making draught excluders from old tights and shredded paper and windmills throughout the day as well as trying to get through the afternoon without using any electricity. (We were all glad that it was sunny outside!)

Climate Summit

Our chair and vice chair of the community group, Jacob and Lauren, attended the Mock Climate Summit at Ripon Cathedral this week. They were fantastic ambassadors for our school in the way they contributed their views, stood up and presented in front of lots of other pupils, teachers and even an MP! They presented Mr David Curry, MP for Ripon and Skipton with Class 3's climate change messages to take to the House of Commons. Listen out for an interview with Jacob on Radio York on Friday 4th December!

Maths Challenge Morning

Some of our Class 3 pupils visited St Aidan's High School this week to carry out some challenging maths tasks. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the morning, came back to school with very interesting looking 3-D graphs and full tummies from having visited the school's award winning restaurant!

Front Page News!

Goldsborough news made the front page of the Knaresborough Post this week! Our picture, which shows off our brand new guided reading books, purchased with FROGS money, was the featured front page article, which made us all very proud (particularly Joshua, Megan and Charlotte who were in the picture!) Rotary Club Concert, King James' School- by Catherine and Rebecca, Class 3

Last Saturday, some children from different schools went to the Rotary Club Concert at King James' School. We sang a selection of songs from the musical 'Oliver'. These were 'Food, Glorious Food' , 'I'd Do Anything', and 'Consider Yourself'. We had lots of fun. We ended up singing 'Consider Yourself' twice because we weren't loud enough! There were lots of musical instruments playing, as well as us singing. All in all, we had a great time!

Class One Visit Knaresborough Library

Reception and Year one had a trip out of class to Knaresborough Library on Monday afternoon.  They went to see a performance of "Commotion in the Ocean".  They all had the opportunity to join in and play a variety of different instruments.  A really good time was had by all the class and the parents!

Songs for St Wilfrid

Class 3 pupils took part in the 'Songs for St Wilfrid' performance at Ripon Cathedral. They sang beautifully and were a credit to themselves and our school. Below are some photos of the children performing.
