Dear Parents and Carers,

As part of our history topic, we are planning a step back in time experience to the period of World War Two. As such, the children will be in role as evacuees who are leaving a heavily bombed city.

To make the evacuation experience as authentic as possible we would like the children to be dressed in clothes similar to those worn in the 1940’s. The children will participate in various activities:

  • Experience the concept of rationing in the kitchen and supplementing rations.
  • Evacuation with gas masks to the Anderson Shelter (under their desks).
  • Make do and mend and dig for victory activities, replicating examples from the time.

Clothing ideas

Boys – Short trousers (or school trousers with long socks pulled over the top to the knee) long socks, white shirt, waistcoat or cardigan, jumper (preferably sleeveless), dark coloured shoes or school pumps with hair parted to the side.

Girls – Dark coloured blouse or skirt (plain or paisley type print), or a gymslip with a sash tied around the waist, a dark grey or black pinafore, a plain woollen cardigan, long white or grey socks, dark coloured shoes or school pumps. Hair should be in pigtails or plaits.
