Through close partnership with parents/carers and encouragement to read at home daily in addition to reading in school, teachers place great emphasis on the enjoyment of reading for pleasure and to learn new things.
In the Nidd Wharfe Federation, we strive to be the best we can be and create a culture where every child can flourish. Reading is at the heart of our curriculum, opening doors to knowledge, imagination and future success. We read widely across all subjects and nurture a genuine love of reading, closely linking it to performing, oracy and drama to bring learning to life.
Phonics Scheme
We use ‘Little Wandle’ to teach a daily phonics lesson to children in EYFS and Year 1. In Year 2, phonics provision continues and is taught alongside discrete teaching of spelling patterns and common exception words.
Reading Scheme
We primarily use the Collins Big Cat books for EYFS, Y1 and Y2 as they allow pupils to access a rich range of reading material, linked closely to phonic progression in the early stages of reading.
